The Story Behind SOVAN International
SOVAN International grew out of my childhood in rural northern Ghana.
I walked several kilometers to school, sometimes barefoot and without breakfast. At home, I fetched water from rivers and dams, even though it was not always safe to drink. Paying for school was a constant challenge, so I shined shoes, sold used clothing on the streets, and worked on farms and construction sites to help cover my school fees and supplies.
I also saw how difficult it was for people in my community to reach the nearest hospital, several kilometers away. Pregnant women, sick children, and other patients often waited hours for transportation. For many families, a bicycle, motorbike, or taxi was the only way to get there. Those delays sometimes had tragic consequences.
While I was in college, I started free night classes for adults in my community who had never had the opportunity to attend school. They wanted to learn to read and write, and I was grateful to help. Alongside literacy lessons, we discussed health, farming practices, and the importance of educating children. I saw how learning gave adults confidence and helped them make decisions for themselves and their families.
Later, as a teacher, I chose to work at a school for children who were deaf or hard of hearing. The school needed more teachers and resources, and the children also faced stigma. Some families had been taught to believe that disability was a curse. I encouraged parents to send their children to school and organized sports activities that brought deaf and hearing students together. That experience showed me how much can change when children have the chance to learn, participate, and feel accepted.
After moving to the United States, I continued sponsoring students and sending school supplies to children in need. I founded SOVAN International so that more people could join me in this work.
Today, we listen to communities, work with local partners, and focus on needs that shape daily life: education, safe water, health care, livelihoods, and inclusion.
I cannot change the challenges I faced as a child, but together, we can help make the journey easier for the next child.
